WELL known Marine Correspondent Tom MacSweeney will officially open the new Castletownbere RNLI lifeboat station on Saturday, May 18th next.

 

The ceremony will include a service of dedication and the official handing over the station from the institution to Castletownbere RNLI.

President to visit Courtmac RNLI during May Bank Holiday weekend

THE President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins will pay a special call to Courtmacsherry RNLI lifeboat station during an official visit to the West Cork village.

 

While there he will view an impressive historical exhibition which is running all through the May Bank Holiday weekend.

Give it some welly for the RNLI Mayday appeal and support West Cork lifeboat stations

mayday1WITH the poor weather, the RNLI is calling on people to put their wellies to good use and support their forthcoming Mayday appeal.

 

The charity that saves lives at sea is asking the public to hold or support a welly themed fundraising event or buy a special yellow welly RNLI Mayday key-ring to raise funds for the lifeboat service which has seven lifeboat stations in Cork. The RNLI Mayday appeal is supported by John West.

BALTIMORE Lifeboat station hosted an inter-agency training exercise recently.

 

The aim of the exercise, coordinated by Niall Twomey, Civil Defence West Cork, was to provide a focused inter-agency training environment in which all personnel will be able to liaise and standardise operating procedures, to prepare for any future taskings in a maritime search scenario.

A COMMITTEE has been formed in Union Hall to petition the Royal National Lifeboat Institute (RNLI) for a new inshore lifeboat.

 

Over 200 people attended a public meeting in Union Hall this week where a decision was made to once again submit proposals to the RNLI board meeting scheduled to take place in Poole, Dorset in April.

FIVE fishermen have been rescued on a stricken trawler off the West Cork coast that got into trouble in the early hours of Thursday morning.

 

The vessel, the 24-metre Castletownbere trawler Anders Nees, got into difficulty under heavy sea conditions in high winds.

Search for missing fisherman off West Cork coast scaled down

Search efforts are on going..

Search efforts are on going.

EMERGENCY services are searching for a fisherman who was reported overboard from the Spanish fishing trawler Ecce Homo some 25 miles west of Mizen have scaled back the search operation.

 

The Shannon rescue helicopter 117 was on the scene overnight and was relieved by 117 from Waterford on Tuesday morning.

The Baltimore and Casteltownbere lifeboats were also on scene being assisted by the naval vessels LE Aisling, LE Emer and local fishing boats.
