School term starts at Bandon’s new Gaelscoil

THE new Bandon Gaelscoil opened its doors to pupils on Wednesday August 29th.

Staff, pupils, parents and the wider school community were delighted with the new state of the art facilities.

Twenty seven new Junior Infants started their primary education through the medium of Irish.

Minister opens €39.5 million pier development in Castletownbere

THE Minister for the Marine, Simon Coveney has officially opened a major new €39.5 million pier development in Castletownbere.

The major development at Dinish Wharf on Dinish Island is set to reinforce the town as one of Ireland’s major fishing ports and its largest whitefish port.

Proximity to rich fishing grounds makes Castletownbere an attractive fish landing location for Irish and foreign vessels.

THE doors were opened in Rosscarbery recently to the area’s latest eating establishment, The Old Town Grill, by owners David and Sam and team.

This new spot for fine food and wine is easy to find, located as it is right on the main N71 near the Celtic Ross Hotel.

Bantry Acute Stroke Unit opens

MINISTER for Health, Dr James Reilly officially opened the Acute Stroke Unit at Bantry General Hospital on Friday.

The unit is the first of its kind in Cork and Kerry and one of the first such units in the country.

The four-bed specialist unit was established at the end of 2009 without the need for any extra staff by reorganising existing resources and admits more than 100 patients with acute stroke annually.

Shoppers flock to new supermarket

THE driving rain and howling wind couldn’t keep Christmas bargain hunters away as hundreds of shoppers flocked to the opening of West Cork’s latest supermarket chain.

Aldi, the German discount supermarket chain opened their first West Cork store in Dunmanway today and judging by the overflowing car park and packed aisles inside, the store will have no shortage of customers.

Despite the bad weather there wasn’t a space to be had in the car park by 9.30 as curious shoppers from across West Cork arrived to see what the fuss was all about.
