THERE are many Gaelgóirí i gCloch na gCoillte, and many more people who may not be fluent, but would love the opportunity to use the “cúpla focail” they have every now and again.
However, in many instances these people don’t know each other, and probably pass each other on the street every day not knowing they could exchange a simple “Dia dhuit” or “Conas atá tú?” as they go about their daily business.

A WEST Cork group is calling for a government profile dedicated to regional issues in a bid to address rural decline.

FIANNA Fáil will host a public meeting on CAP reform in Bantry next week, where farmers will be consulted about their views in advance of crucial negotiations on the policy.
The meeting will take place next Tuesday, January 29th at the Westlodge Hotel in Bantry at 8pm.
Barry Cowen
THE Fianna Fáil spokesperson on Environment & Local Government, Barry Cowen TD was guest speaker at a public meeting on the topic of “Rural survival” held in Clonakilty recently.
During a lengthy speech, Mr Cowen said that the Government’s “softly softly” approach in dealing with the issue of Ireland’s bank debt had failed.

COUNCILLORS from County Cork’s 12 town councils are seeking a meeting with Environment Minister Phil Hogan in the hope of changing the minister’s mind on plans to abolish town councils.
Under plans announced last year all 80 existing town councils across the country face the axe at the 2014 local elections.

THE bitterly cold night did little to dissuade all those who gathered at the Maritime Hotel in Bantry for the latest Save Bantry Bay (SBB) public meeting on Friday night last.

THERE were protests by angry traders and residents in Clonakilty on Tuesday evening outside the regular monthly meeting of the local town council.
The protesters claim that little has been done since the disastrous floods three months ago devastated the town centre.
The next public meeting of Sustainable Clonakilty is next Wednesday 27th June at 8pm in O’Donovan’s Hotel, with the interesting subject title, “Biodiversity And Health” with Dr Paddy Sleeman, Senior Researcher At UCC.
After a very successful first night on the subject of Love, the second meeting of the West Cork Philosophical Society will be held on Thursday 21st June at the Parish Hall at Church Cross (at the Cedar Tree) at 7.30pm.
