Funding boost for West Cork harbours

HARBOURS across West Cork are set to benefit from more than €2,5 million in funding announced by the Department of Transport.

 

The €2,632,000 in funding which is being made available for the maintenance and upgrade of a number of Cork harbours, as part of the agreement which sees the ownership of such transferred to local authorities.

Minister opens Goleen’s new state-of-the-art Coast Guard station

MINISTER Leo Varadkar performed the official opening of the new Goleen Coast Guard station where the first of the Coast Guard’s new Sikorsky S92 helicopters also held a fly-by on its first day of operation to mark the occassion.

Continued low VAT rate for tourism welcomed

LOCAL TD Jim Daly has welcomed the Government’s announcement that the temporary 9 per cent per cent  lower VAT rate which applies across the tourism sector, will be extended into 2013.

Leo Varadkar TD, Minister for Tourism, made the announcement in the Dáil when responding to questioning on the issue.

Minister to open West Cork Chamber Music Festival

THE Minister for Transport Leo Varadkar will be the guest of honour at the opening of the 2012 West Cork Chamber Music Festival.

Minister Varadkar will open the nine-day Festival at a special Friends and Patrons reception in Bantry House on Friday, June 29th.

Generously supported by the Culture Programme of the European Union, the Arts Council of Ireland and Failte Ireland, the West Cork Chamber Music Festival runs from June 28th to July 7th.

Bantry Port must stand-alone

THE Port of Bantry must not be amalgamated with the Port of Cork if it is to reach its full potential, that was the message from local senator Denis O’Donovan to Transport Minister Leo Varadkar today.

Senator O’Donovan was responding to rumours suggesting that plans are underway to amalgamate Bantry with the Port of Cork.

Niagara Falls to go green to mark St Patrick’s Day celebrations

Niagara Falls will be turned green to mark St Patrick's Day.

THE London Eye, Burj Al Arab in Dubai, Table Mountain in South Africa, the Empire State Building in New York, the Sky Tower in Auckland and for the first time ever, Niagara Falls and the TV tower in Berlin’s Alexanderplatz are just some of the iconic buildings and attractions around the world which will “go green” this year to mark St Patrick’s Day and to kick off a major Tourism Ireland promotional drive to grow overseas tourism.

Tourism Minister Leo Varadkar said, “St Patrick’s Day provides a unique shop window for Ireland around the world, for Irish tourism and for trade and investment. That’s why we are using St Patrick’s Day to launch The Gathering 2013 in all of our main overseas markets.
