West Cork tourist industry will fight to retain visitors

John Loughnan - "We must stay focussed"

TOURSIM businesses in West Cork will fight even harder to attract visitors this year in the wake of a shock decline in overseas visitor numbers at the end of 2011.

That was the message from Clonakilty Mayor Cllr John Loughnan who said that he was surprised by CSO figures that showed a drop in visitor numbers for the months of September to November.

The figures show that 4.1 per cent or 65,000 fewer people visited Ireland from overseas from September to November last year compared to the same period in 2010.

Protect your town urges councillor

CLONAKILTY Town Council is asking local to register with the Civil Defence in an effort to boost numbers to help with future flood protection efforts.

The call was made by local Fianna Fáil councillor John Loughnan at a recent meeting of Clonakilty Town Council.

Those interested are asked to contact the Town Hall on 023 883 3380 to register their interest.

Cllr Loughnan said he would organise a public meeting for all those who register their interest and hoped that a new branch could be set up in the town by November.
