A DISASTROUS change of course was made just six minutes before a trawler steamed directly into a rocky island with five fishermen dying in raging seas as the vessel sank.

 

A marine expert told a Cork coroner’s inquest he believed one of the crew either turned off the auto-pilot on the ‘Tit Bonhomme’ or else manually adjusted the course settings before it ploughed into a West Cork island. [Read more...]

KEVIN Kershaw made two desperate 999 calls from his mobile phone in the minutes after the ‘Tit Bonhomme’ trawler struck rocks at the entrance to Glandore Bay in west Cork.

 

The calls were made at 5.46am and 5.49am on January 15 2012 as the 21-year old was told by his desperate crew mates that he didn’t need call credit to make a 999 alert.

Vintage cars take to the road

vintage-carsTHE West Cork Vintage Club annual run takes place this Sunday (May 19th) starting at the Celtic Ross Hotel in Rosscarbery and heading to Baltimore via the scenic route through Glandore and Union Hall.

 

Up to 100 cars are exepected to take part including the classic Ford Cortina once owned by former Taoiseach Jack Lynch.

Lots happening to support Glandore Church project

glandore-churchCHRIST Church, Kilfaughnabeg, Glandore was consecrated on the 12th September, 1861 and since then has served the local Church of Ireland community.

 

Regular services are held during the summer months of July and August at 10am. However, its future was at risk because of the dangerous condition of the tower. Everyone agreed that it would be a tragedy if this important and beautiful landmark were allowed to fall into ruin.

Safety changes to be put in place following Tit Bonhomme report

A REPORT from the Marine Casualty Investigation Board (MCIB) report into the sinking of the Tit Bonhomme in January 2012 has found that fatigue was a major factor in the sinking of the vessel.

 

The reports findings show that the vessel was on auto-pilot when she struck rocks at the mouth of Glandore Harbour resulting in the loss of five crew members, one of the six crew survived the tragedy.

A COMMITTEE has been formed in Union Hall to petition the Royal National Lifeboat Institute (RNLI) for a new inshore lifeboat.

 

Over 200 people attended a public meeting in Union Hall this week where a decision was made to once again submit proposals to the RNLI board meeting scheduled to take place in Poole, Dorset in April.

A SEA tragedy that sparked a 26 day search for five lost fishermen has been remembered in a moving church service in West Cork.

Exactly a year after the Tit Bonhomme fishing trawler hit rocks and foundered in Glandore Harbour, the families of those lost gathered in grief at St Bridget’s Church in Union Hall.

Gardaí seek witnesses in Glandore body case

GARDAÍ are asking anyone with any information relating to the body discovered in Glandore on Sunday to come forward.

The body of a 65-year-old man was discovered at 11:15am in a rented flat near the Marine Hotel in the village on Sunday, he has since been identified as Stanley Giles who was originally from Rosscarbery. [Read more...]
