Donna Burke & Mary Ann McCarthy Two Oar Challenge Silver medallists Ladies

THE  build up to the 2013 rowing season continues to ramp up for the members of the GalleyFlash.

 

The second GalleyFlash Two Oar Challenge was held on Sunday May 5th, teams from across West Cork and further afield competed for the title of Two Oar Champion 2013.

In the end it was the home team of John Harrington and Dave McCarthy coxed by Julie Harrington who emerged victorious in the men’s event. While the top Galley team in Ladies event were Donna Burke and Mary Ann McCarthy with cox Julie who finished second to a very strong Kilmacsimon team.

Galley Flash notes

Congratulations to the McCarthy sisters, Claire, Catherine and Mary Anne on being presented with an Achievement Award at The Opinion / Bandon Co-op Annual Community & Sports Awards.

 

They received the award in recognition of their achievements at last year’s All-Ireland Coastal Rowing Finals, where Claire was on the All-Ireland winning GalleyFlash Under 14 Ladies team, Mary Anne was on the Under 21 Ladies winning team while Catherine collected her Gold medal as a member of the Galley winning team in the Cork Yawl race at the finals.

Galley Flash on dry land for annual fun run

WITH all the mouse racing complete, the focus for the GalleyFlash now turns to road racing with their annual Fun Run by the Sea taking place on Sunday Nov 25th.

 

With three categories Adult Runners, Under 16 Runners and Walkers, it is hoped that an even bigger entry than last year will participate in this the third running of the event. [Read more...]

Much of the focus for the members of the GalleyFlash will be on fundraising over the next few months.

GalleyFlash Rowing – much needed funding boost

SWCYRA 2012 Senior Ladies Champions: Laura Connolly, Donna Burke, Danny Hayes (Cox), Lisa Hayes and Niamh Hayes

THE rowing season may be over with a month yet last weekend was another busy one for the members and supporters of the GalleyFlash.

 

The club had earlier been announced as one of the beneficiaries of the Ardfield Summer Festival and last Friday at the presentation night the club received a very welcome cheque for €1,900 as their share of the profits.

Galley Flash notes – All-Ireland gold haul beyond wildest dreams

WHEN the GalleyFlash collected three sets of Gold medals at the 2011 All-Ireland in Rosslare, they would never in their wildest dreams have expected even more in 2012. But in years to come 2012 will be remembered for, among other things, the year four sets of All-Ireland Gold medals found their way back to Ardfield-Rathbarry.

The omens were good, even on Friday evening when Curley O’Driscoll’s rendition of the “Boy’s of the GalleyFlash” mysteriously played over the PA immediately after the National Anthem at the Broadstrand venue. [Read more...]

Galley Flash notes – Fine haul of silverware on its way to Ardfield-Rathbarry

SWCYRA & Cork County Champions, GalleyFlash Senior Ladies Niamh Hayes, Lisa Hayes, Donna Burke and Laura Connolly.

AS the 2012 rowing comes to a conclusion this weekend with the All-Ireland Finals in Broadstrand, Courtmacsherry, last Sunday saw the conclusion of the Celtic Ross sponsored SWCYRA Championship.

With the five rounds of this West Cork Championship complete the medal winners have been determined and the GalleyFlash have a fine haul of silverware on its way to Ardfield-Rathbarry.

GalleyFlash Notes – Schull Regatta

Waiting to changeover, Schull Regatta

THE continued poor weather threatened to disrupt the holding of the fourth round of the Celtic Ross SWCYRA in Schull last Sunday.

However the forecast southeasterly wind did not materialise and the predicted heavy rain didn’t start to fall until nearly five o’clock, when 13 of the scheduled 18 races were completed.
