DETAILS of Bandon’s proposed flood relief measures aimed at preventing a recurrence of the devastating floods of 2009 were unveiled by Minister of State Brian Hayes yesterday.
The proposed €10 million works are expected to begin next year and include a new foot bridge to replace the existing 100-year-old structure, pumping stations, river dredging, new floods walls and embankments.
The award was decided by a public online vote and the bridge was the clear winner.
The project also scooped the Best Paper or Presentation of the Year award.
The €1.8 million new bridge was opened on St Patrick’s Day and is a replica of the 100-year-old original structure it replaced.
At 52 meters the original bridge was the longest concrete arch bridge in the world when built in 1909.
