ROADS across West Cork were closed today (Friday) as hours of torrential rain inundated many areas.

 

The worst hit areas were between Skibbereen and Kinsale as the downpour moved east throughout the day and many secondary routes between Cork and Skibbereen were closed in places.

Funding for flood repairs to local roads

LOCAL independent councillor Declan Hurley has confirmed that funding has been diverted to address a number of local roads in the greater Dunmanway area which were damaged in the recent severe flash floods.

In particular roads in Haremount, Monavadda and Derryleigh had to be closed to traffic due to the severity of the damage. [Read more...]

BANTRY residents and business owners awoke on Wednesday morning to find many premises under several inches of water.

 

With torrential rain, strong force winds and very high tides, the conditions proved perfect for the unsuspected flooding centred round the town square.

JCB called to action to prevent Clonakilty flooding disaster

EMERGENCY services in Clonakilty were forced to clear a drainage channel with a JCB digger in the early hours of Thursday morning to prevent a repeat of June’s flooding disaster in the town as up to two feet of water accumulated following heavy rain.

 

It is the third time the town has been flooded this year.

THERE were protests by angry traders and residents in Clonakilty on Tuesday evening outside the regular monthly meeting of the local town council.

 

The protesters claim that little has been done since the disastrous floods three months ago devastated the town centre.

THE Clonakilty Flood Relief Fund was set up earlier this week at Clonakilty Credit Union in the aftermath of the recent serve flooding.

The fund was initiated by Town Mayor Cllr. Cionnaith Ó Súilleabháin who approached representatives of local experienced and well-respected organisations who have a long history of administering financial aid to the people of Clonakilty to manage the fund. [Read more...]

THE town of Clonakilty woke up to a scene of devastation today (Thursday) following the worst flooding in living memory overnight.

Virtually every business from the Western Road to Faxbridge has suffered significant flooding following a torrential downpour in the early hours of the morning which simply overwhelmed the town’s drainage system.
