Bailey legal team seek costs

LEGAL representatives for Ian Bailey are seeking costs “at the highest level” from the State that could run into millions of euro following Mr Bailey’s successful challenge against extradition proceedings in the Supreme Court.

The legal costs claim includes items not usually claimed for such as the cost of French legal advice.

The Schull resident is wanted for questioning by French authorities who are carrying out a new investigation into the murder of Sophie Toscan du Plantier in Toormore in 1996.

We were “sold a pup” – Senator wants answers in du Plantier case

THE people of West Cork were “sold a pup” by gardaí over the Ian Bailey affair, local Fianna Fáil senator Denis O’Donovan has said in the Seanad.

The Bantry-based senator who is a lawyer himself said that the revelations about the Sophie Toscan du Plantier murder inquiry meant that in reality the French film producer’s killer was most likely still at large.

Ian Bailey wins appeal against extradition to France

THE Supreme Court in Dublin has upheld Ian Bailey’s appeal against his extradition to France.

The five judges of the court made the decision unanimously.

Mr Bailey is wanted for questioning by the French authorities who have initiated a new investigation into the 1996 murder of French woman Sophie Toscan du Plantier at Toormore, near Schull.

Mr Bailey who lives near Schull was questioned twice in relation to the killing during the original investigation but never charged.

Judgement reserved in Bailey appeal

THE Supreme Court in Dublin reserved its judgement on Ian Bailey’s appeal against extradition to France for two to three weeks today.

Mr Bailey is wanted for questioning in France in connection with the killing of French national Sophie Toscan du Plantier near her holiday home at Toormore, Schull in 1996.

Bailey appeal hearing begins today

THE Supreme Court in Dublin will today begin hearing the appeal from Ian Bailey against his extradition to France which was ordered by the High Court.

Mr Bailey is wanted for questioning by French authorities as part of a new investigation into the death of Sophie Toscan du Plantier near her holiday home near Toormore, Schull in 1996.

He was questioned twice as part of the original garda investigation but has always denied any involvement in the killing.

New evidence in Bailey case to be heard in Supreme Court

The appeal will be heard at the Supreme Court

NEW evidence presented on behalf of Ian Bailey will be heard as part of his appeal against extradition to France in the Supreme Court that begins on Monday.

The five-judge Supreme Court ordered the new evidence be admitted at a hearing in Dublin today.

Mr Bailey’s legal team had asked for the original High Court appeal to be re-heard in light of the new evidence.

Lawyers for the State had argued that the new evidence, which includes allegations of garda bias in the handling of the case, added nothing new to the case.

State to argue files not relevant in Bailey extradition

LAWYERS for the State are set to argue that files detailing serious questions about the garda investigation into the death of Sophie Toscan du Plantier in 1996 are not relevant to the extradition of a suspect in the case to France.

Lawyers for Ian Bailey claim that revelations in a review of the case in 2001 prove that Mr Bailey was unfairly treated and also allege garda misconduct in the course of the investigation.

Bailey was not only suspect in du Plantier killing

IAN Bailey was not the only suspect in the killing of Sophie Toscan du Plantier in 1996 at her holiday home in West Cork according to  2001 review of the case a solicitor in the office of the DPP .

Ms du Plantier’s battered body was found in a laneway near her holiday home in Toormore 15 years ago.

Mr Bailey who lives in the area was questioned twice by gardaí in connection with the killing but never charged.

He has always denied any involvement and is currently fighting extradition to France where he is wanted for questioning as part of a new French investigation into her death.

Up to ten suspects were originally considered according to the internal review.
