THE new Mizen Head footbridge has won the Engineers Ireland Engineering Project of the Year Excellence Award for 2011.

The award was decided by a public online vote and the bridge was the clear winner.

The project also scooped the Best Paper or Presentation of the Year award.

The €1.8 million new bridge was opened on St Patrick’s Day and is a replica of the 100-year-old original structure it replaced.

At 52 meters the original bridge was the longest concrete arch bridge in the world when built in 1909.
