WARNING signs placed at two West Cork beaches following an E.coli scare were finally removed today (Friday), almost a week after test results showed high levels of the bacteria in the water.

THE two West Cork beaches that were closed to bathing last week due to high levels of the bacteria E.coli found in the water have today shown a marked improvement in water quality following pollution tests by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
The beaches at Garretstown, Kinsale and Coolmaine, Kilbrittain were among seven in County Cork that were closed to bathing last Friday when the levels of the bacteria recorded breached EU safety guidelines.

BANDON’S town mayor Gillian Coughlan has expressed her concern that seven beaches in Cork have been shut due to poor quality water including Coolmain Beach near Kilbrittain, due to traces of E.coli in the water.
The Fianna Fáil councillor described the situation as “hugely concerning”.
“It’s the high tourist season and the last thing we need is seven of the most popular beaches in Cork to be closed for swimming,” she said. [Read more...]

TWO beaches in West Cork are among seven in the county that have been temporarily closed to bathing due to concerns over high levels of the E.coli bacteria in the water.
The beaches at Garretstown near Kinsale and Coolmaine near Kilbrittain have been closed as a precautionary measure by Cork County Council as the levels of the bacteria recorded are above EU guidelines.
