Increase in visitor numbers “fantastic news”

THE first annual increase in visitor numbers to Ireland has been hailed as “fantastic news” for the tourism sector.

Figures published by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) show that visitors to Ireland have increased by 7.8 per cent in 2011, in comparison to the 2010 figures.

“With some 6.5 million overseas visitors coming here last year alone, this marks a great vote of confidence in Ireland, and will no doubt offer reassurance to many local businesses across Ireland,” said West Cork TD Michael McCarthy.

TOURSIM businesses in West Cork will fight even harder to attract visitors this year in the wake of a shock decline in overseas visitor numbers at the end of 2011.

That was the message from Clonakilty Mayor Cllr John Loughnan who said that he was surprised by CSO figures that showed a drop in visitor numbers for the months of September to November.

The figures show that 4.1 per cent or 65,000 fewer people visited Ireland from overseas from September to November last year compared to the same period in 2010.

Big jump in visitor numbers marks “turning point” for industry

FIGURES just released by the Central Statistics Office show that the number of overseas visitors coming to Ireland between January and September this year have increased by 10 per cent compared to the same period last year.

Local TD Michael McCarthy said the figures were offered proof that government policy was working.

“This is no coincidence, but the manifestation of a catalogue of government-led programmes which are aimed at making tourism the engine of Ireland’s economic recovery.
