West Cork couple found guilty of handling stolen property

A LITHUANIAN national living in West Cork has been jailed for a year and banned from Ireland for five years on his release arising out of an investigation into a spate of burglaries throughout Cork and Kerry where over €90,000 worth of property was stolen.

THE families of the three Egyptian fisherman who drowned when the trawler Tit Bonhomme sank in January 2012 have launched a legal action against the owners of the vessel.

 

The civil case is being taken on behalf of the men who were illegal immigrants when they were working on the boat when it sank at the mouth of Glandore Harbour.

A WEST Cork motorist who pleaded guilty to careless driving which resulted in the death of a 67-year-old woman has been given a three-month suspended sentence and a two-year driving ban by Judge Sean O’Donnobháin in Cork.

 

Sinead Timoney from Millcove, Rosscarbery was originally charged with dangerous driving causing the death of Mary O’Leary on the main N71 south of Innishannon in September 2011 but pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of careless driving.

 

The court in Cork heard that the husband of the deceased, Donal O’Leary from Dunmanway, did not want to see another life ruined and did not want to see the 30-year-old go to jail. [Read more...]

A FARMER near Baltimore used cannabis instead of cash to pay construction workers who were building a house for him, it has emerged in court.

 

John McFadden (57) who is originally from London disclosed his novel bartering system to investigating gardaí after his property, a 50-acre cattle farm at Trafraska, was raided and cannabis plants found on the premises.

Former garda gets 2 ½ years for robbing elderly woman

A FORMER garda from Kinsale has been jailed for 2 ½ years after being found guilty of stealing almost €2,000 from an elderly woman while on duty.

David Foran (30) who was stationed at Fitzgibbon Street Garda Station in Dublin when he committed the offence in 2009 held his head in his hands as Judge Mary Ellen Ring sentenced him to three-years in prison with the last six months suspended.

BANDON Credit Union have been given the go-ahead by the courts to sue Davy Stockbrokers over alleged losses amounting to €900,000 which the credit union claim came about due to advice given by Davy’s relating to a €2m investment bond.

A MAN and a woman charged with the murder of a man in Bandon last November have been remanded to appear in court next month.

Catherine O’Connor (35) of 3 Bridge House in Bandon was remanded on bail at Bandon District Court, while co-accused, Ciprian Grozavu (37) a Romanian national with the same address, was remanded in custody.

He is currently being held at Limerick Prison. [Read more...]
