Dunmanway pipped at the post in anti-litter challenge

DUNMANWAY town did very well again in this year’s Anti-Litter Challenge winning second place in Category A towns section.

They missed out by only half a point to the eventual winners Blarney.

Clon demands action in flood aftermath

Clonakilty Chamber of Commerce representatives and flood victims, Ger Harte, (Eurospar and Courtyard), Robert Walsh, (Walsh Printers) and Con O’ Neill, (O’ Neill Sports) who between them had well over €1.5 million losses as a result of flood damage to their properties, equipment and stock, with Town Mayor, Cllr Cionnaith Ó Súilleabháin at County Hall.

New plan wants more cruise liners for West Cork

The launch of the new Cruise Tourism strategy at County Hall.

A NEW strategy on cruise tourism in West Cork was formally launched at County Hall this week.

Under the plan Cork County Council is to establish a special agency tasked with bringing more cruise liners into West Cork.

The council is acting on a consultant’s report that shows the region could benefit significantly from chasing cruise line firms.

Forty eight cruise ships have dropped anchor in Bantry Bay in the past 10 years and it is estimated that this was worth €1 million to the local economy.

West Cork Islands Community Council launched

THE recently established West Cork Islands Community Council was formally launched by the Deputy Mayor of County Cork, Cllr Declan Hurley at a meeting of Cork County Council in County Hall yesterday.

Syd Cheatle, a resident of Sherkin Island was elected chairperson of the new body which will be in a position to speak for all of the islands’ communities and work for their long-term overall interests, as a voluntary, collective, representative structure modelled on Muintir na Tíre.

It is hoped the Community Council will add a more representative and collective approach to the development of the West Cork Islands, and will enable the exchange of information and experiences between the island communities.
