Lack of action on commercial rates shows contempt for small business

At a time when we should be rebuilding the domestic economy, the Government has increased VAT to 23%, the fifth highest rate in the European Union.

 

Small family businesses and retailers, which the Government promised to support by amending commercial rates, are on their knees. Nothing has been done and the opportunity has been wasted.

Councils write off €17 million as bad debts

TOWN councils in West Cork have written off tens of thousands of euro of commercial rates as bad debts in recent years as the recession has savaged many small and medium sized businesses.

From 2007 to 2009 Clonakilty Town Council has written off almost €80,000, Macroom in the same period wrote off more than €60,000 and Skibbereen gave up on a staggering €413,000 in commercial rates.
