2013 fisheries map for Cork and Kerry released

BIMBORD Iascaigh Mhara (BIM) has launched its Fisheries Management Map 2013 and urged vessel owners in the Cork/Kerry region to access and use the guide as an up-to-date, reliable fisheries information tool.

 

“The 2013 edition of the map brings together for the first time, in one place, all of the areas around Ireland affected by closures or recovery plans or additional gear requirements,” said Michael Keatinge, Director of Fisheries and Training Services, BIM.

FOLLOWING the official launch of the Axis 4 – Sustainable Development of Fishery Dependent Areas Programme in June 2012, Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM) has announced that the Fisheries Local Action Group or ‘FLAG’ responsible for the South-West region (Cork and Kerry) has been established.

 

Coordinated by Vera O’Donovan and Huan Tan, BIM Regional FLAG Coordinators for the South West area, the group comprises representatives from the fisheries, aquaculture, seafood production, environment, community, and tourism sectors and will be charged with developing a Local Integrated Development Strategy for their area over the coming months.

West Cork stars at Seafood Circle awards

SEVERAL West Cork businesses were among the winners at the 2012 Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM) Seafood Circle awards.

The awards recognize excellence in seafood among retail and hospitality outlets that continually offer excellent quality seafood and service to their customers.

Scally’s SuperValu Clonakilty were awarded the Supermarket Seafood Counter of the Year award while The Fish Shop in Union Hall took the Best Customer Service accolade.

Scally’s were winners again picking up the Innovation & Development award while Patricia O’Mahony from Mary Ann’s Bar & Restaurant in Castletownshend took the coveted Seafood Chef of the Year prize.

National Seafood Centre officially opened in Clon

Minister Coveney officially opens the centre

THE Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine Simon Coveney today officially opened the new National Seafood Centre in Clonakilty.

The centre is a co-located “one stop shop” for the seafood related services of the Department of Agriculture, the Sea Fisheries Protection Authority and Bord Iascaigh Mhara.

“My department, the public servants working in this new facility and I are committed to making sure that every effort is made to position Ireland to take full advantage of the enormous opportunities we see for expanding the seafood sector in Ireland,” said Minister Coveney.

West Cork fisherman is new safety ambassador

Noel O'Sullivan, the new safety ambassador.

CASTLETOWNBERE fisherman Noel O’Sullivan knows a thing or two about the dangers of the ocean after managing to survive when his boat capsized off the Isles of Scilly in 2007.

Now Noel has been chosen as the first “ambassador” for a joint safety campaign from Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM), Irish Water Safety (IWS) and the RNLI aimed at encouraging fishermen to wear their lifejackets.

Noel and his six crew survived when their boat Discovery capsized in January 2007 but he says the experience has made him very conscious of crew safety ever since.
