Soccerline – buying and selling

Jose Mourinhoby Striker

Although this is, to all intents and purposes, the close season as far as the English soccer game is concerned, there is still no rest for the managers and mentors of the all of the Premiership clubs with regard to browsing into what is available on the transfer markets in the various countries around Europe.

Those owners on millionaires row can relax a little now, mainly because the main English Classic, the Epsom Derby, has been done and dusted, mopped up again by the insatiable Ballydoyle winning bandwagon.

Soccerline – There is hope

Well, wouldn’t ya just know it! There I was, last week, and I spoutin’ about the fact that a few of our International team looked as if they were indeed past their sell-bye date, when one of those players which I felt was in this category, Robbie Keane, goes and bangs in three goals against the Faroe Islands on last Friday evening in the Aviva. Alright, I do realise that the Islands team are really only a bunch of part-timers and the like, but three goals is as good as it gets in any soccer game, and, as a matter of fact, I did hear a top manager of a few years ago, when someone commented on how lazy his main striker was, said that if the player gave him one goal in every match he would never lose his place, even if he continued in his habit of being a lazy son of a gun! The Winning Post – North to Catterick

Do you recall me mentioning a few weeks back about the strategy of the team from Ballydoyle with regard to the Chester May meeting?

Soccerline – something positive

It really makes a welcome change to be reporting on some positive news where the Irish soccer team is concerned, for, instead of talking about those sometimes disjointed displays, we now seem to have entered into a more organised type of performance, confirmed in recent days with a terrific show against England at Wembley, and then the workmanlike win over Georgia in the Aviva.

Well, we witnessed bureaucracy in the racing world at its very worst over last weekend, with the very late obstacle to the anticipated return to the saddle of the irrepressible Frankie Dettori, when the French racing people refused to renew the Italian jockeys licence to ride, he having finished his six-months period of suspension on Sunday last.

Frankie was due to return to racing on Monday this week at Leicester, with his agent Ray Cochrane having already lined up a full list of mounts there, and also at the following days meeting at the Nottingham racecourse.

Soccerline – up and down

Now that the relegation battle is finally over, it makes interesting reading to work out just what it means, in financial terms of course, to the three teams that finally bit the bullet, and will now have to go into the battleground that is customary in the Championship for season 2013-14.

A piece of history

chester-racecourseBy Stable Lad

WHILE looking at the racing at Chester last week, it struck me that this looked to be a very extraordinary racecourse, with the horses seemingly always on the turn throughout most races, and the draw being particularly advantageous in the sprint races to the horses drawn on the inside of the track.

TO paraphrase an old Gilbert and Sullivan ditty, “a soccer manager’s lot is not a happy one”, an adage that would apply this week in many quarters in both England and Ireland.
