100 years ago in Beara

LauraghMarcus Dawkins picture of Lauragh School on the day of the Misson c. 1913. The school looks exactly the same today 100 years later and this very picture helped the owners of this previously unpublished collection to trace the locations where the pictures were taken.

 

The only clue they had was that Marcus Dawkins worked as a secetary for the 5th Marquess of Lansdowne who owned the Lansdowne Estate.

THE RNLI Castletownbere Lifeboat came to the aid off of the West Cork coast where a small yacht had got into trouble.

 

The vessel, the 27′ yacht Caroline had a crew of two men aboard when she got into difficulty at around 6am on Monday morning while travelling from Valentia Island in Co. Kerry to Cape Clear.

West Cork vampire movie hits the screens

ByzantiumA VAMPIRE movie filmed partly on the Beara Peninsula in West Cork has gone on general release around the world.

 

The movie, Byzantium, directed by Neill Jordan and starring Gemma Arterton and Saoirse Ronan tells the story of a pair of female vampires who wreak havoc on an unsuspecting English seaside town.
