Borrowers and lenders need to engage more to resolve problem of mortgage arrears

FINE Gael Cork South West TD, Jim Daly has said the way forward in resolving issues relating to mortgage arrears centres on better communication between banks and the borrowers who may find themselves in financial difficulty.

“If a sustainable path is to be set out in terms of addressing mortgage arrears, the first step has to be improving the communication between the borrower and the lender. “Financial institutions have to address the manner in which computer generated letters are issued to customers within just a few days of an account going into arrears and those in financial distress must learn not to ignore the issue but to talk to their loan provider about their current situation,” he said.

TD “shocked” by increase in tax arrears

Jim Daly "shocked" by the figures

A WEST Cork TD has expressed his shock at figures supplied to him by the Minister for Finance, Michael Noonan, which reveal that the amount of tax owed to the Revenue Commissioners has doubled since 2007.

Clonakilty-based Fine Gael TD Jim Daly said that the figures represented a shocking increase in just four years, adding that they underline the hardship facing businesses nationwide.

“Small business owners are seriously suffering in the current economic climate. Entrepreneurs are the life-blood of our economy, whom we all depend upon to create new employment and therefore boost demand for other services.
