A SEA tragedy that sparked a 26 day search for five lost fishermen has been remembered in a moving church service in West Cork.

Exactly a year after the Tit Bonhomme fishing trawler hit rocks and foundered in Glandore Harbour, the families of those lost gathered in grief at St Bridget’s Church in Union Hall.

Remembering the Flying Tiger Flight 923

Incredibly, 48 people survived the crash.

THE dedication of a memorial plaque to the 50th anniversary of the crash of Flying Tiger Flight 923 off the coast of West Cork will take place at Galley Head lighthouse, this Sunday, September 23rd at 3.30pm.

Twenty-eight people died when Flying Tiger Lines Flight 923 crashed into the sea en route from New Jersey to Frankfurt during a heavy storm.

Large turnout in Bandon for Gerry Adams

THERE was a large turnout in Bandon on Easter Sunday to hear Gerry Adams TD deliver the oration in St Patrick’s Cemetery on the 96th anniversary of the 1916 Rising.

More than 400 people were in attendance to listen to the Sinn Fein President and to honour those who fought in the rising at the republican plot in the local graveyard.

THE FIRST Garda car to arrive in Bandon in 1962, a navy blue Ford Cortina, was among a collection of Garda memorabilia on display at Bandon Garda Station to mark the station’s 90th anniversary recently.

It was flanked by a 1961 Triumph – “a genuine Garda motorbike” according to Superintendent Eddie MacEoin and a Model T Ford dating from 1922 “the year we were formed.”

Sophie’s parents attend mass in her memory

GEORGES and Marguerite Bouniol, the parents of murdered film producer Sophie Toscan du Plantier, attended a special mass in Goleen on Sunday in memory of their daughter who was killed 15 years ago.

Sophie’s body was discovered close to her holiday home in Toormore in 1996 and despite one of the biggest murder investigations ever mounted in the State, her killer has never been caught.

THE parents of French film producer Sophie Toscan du Plantier who was murdered near her holiday home at Toormoore, Schull in 1996 arrived at Cork Airport today (Tues).

Georges and Marguerite Bouniol will attend mass in Goleen this coming Sunday to commemorate the 15th anniversary of Sophie’s death. [Read more...]

RTÉ radio show to celebrate the life and music of Seán Ó Riada

THIS month sees the 40th anniversary of Seán Ó Riada’s death, and to mark the anniversary RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta will be broadcasting a new series starting on in October that celebrates his life and work.

Seán Ó Riada 1931-1971 will feature interviews with Seán’s friends throughout the country and will give listeners an insight and an understanding of the gifted musician, composer and scholar.
