Well, here we are at last at one of the crunch times of the season, going into a three day meeting at the famous Aintree track, which will feature some fine racing over its duration, and culminates on Saturday with the Grand National, which is regarded all over the world as the greatest race of all in the realm of national hunt racing.

Legends of Cheltenham and Aintree

INthe history of both those great races, the Cheltenham Gold Cup and the Aintree Grand National, there have only been two horses who managed to win both races, and only one horse who completed that almost impossible double in the same season.

 

This incredible horse was the very legendary Golden Miller, who also holds the record for the Cheltenham Gold Cup, for he won that particular race on five successive occasions, 1932, 33, 34, 35, and 1936, and It was during this five-timer that he also completed the famous chasing double, by adding the Grand National to his CV in 1934.

During every national hunt season there are two really stand-out meetings on the calendar, the Cheltenham Festival, which we’ve already had, and the massive Aintree Festival, which features, among many other top class races, one of racing’s prime prizes, the Grand National, the very mention of which stirs exciting memories in the hearts of people the world over.

Here comes the national

This is one of the periods in every year when racing generally seems to slow up a little, which of course gives those involved in the sport a good chance to take stock as to what they want to achieve as the season goes on, be it on the flat or otherwise.

For ourselves, it is also a bit of a sitting back time waiting for the countdown to the Aintree Grand National, which takes place at the end of next week, and it gives us a good ten days to prepare for it.
