Minister backs down but septic tank fight is not over

MINISTER Phil Hogan has reduced the septic tank registration fee from €50 to €5 for the first three months of the scheme which starts in April but opponents in West Cork have warned that funds must be made available to assist families in upgrading their septic tanks.

According to Bandon Sinn Féin councillor Rachel McCarthy the government still needs to make a clear commitment that any upgrading of household septic tanks will be fully funded by the Department of Environment.

“Anything less is unacceptable,” she said, “By failing to comply with EEC/EU directives dating back to 1975, consecutive governments have failed both the public and the environment.

Anti septic-tank charges public meeting in Knockavilla

IT was standing room only in a packed Knockavilla Hall, Innishannon, last night at a public meeting held to oppose the introduction of the government Water Services Amendment Bill.

This Bill which is currently passing through the Oireachtas proposes to introduce a registration fee of €50 for rural households dependent on septic tanks and other waste water systems.

As well as this an inspection system is to be introduced which will leave householders who fail to reach the required standard of waste water quality liable to heavy costs in upgrading their systems.
