
West Cork couple found guilty of handling stolen property by West Cork Times Reporter A LITHUANIAN national living in West Cork has been jailed for a year and banned from Ireland for five years on his release arising out of an investigation into a spate of burglaries throughout Cork and Kerry where over €90,000 worth of property was stolen. PERMISSION to resume exploration at the site of one of the worse naval disasters of the twentieth century is under application at the Office of Public Works (OPW). Lying 14 miles off the Old Head of Kinsale in 100 metres (328 feet) of water, the wreck of the RMS Lusitania remains undisturbed since it sank with the loss of 1201 lives at 2.28pm on Friday May 7, 1915. The ship’s owner, American businessman Gregg Bemis, has applied to the OPW for permission to conduct a series of dives on the wreck. “Now Wakes The Sea”, the open submission exhibition and award for Irish And UK artists has been announced by the Kinsale Arts Festival For 2013. MINISTER for Agriculture Simon Coveney has announced that he has extended the duration of the Imported Fodder Transport Scheme for one week. The scheme will now run until Friday 10th May. The Minister also today confirmed that maize silage is eligible under the scheme. He said his Department has been working with the industry on this and said that large quantities of maize silage up to 6,000 tons are currently being sourced for early delivery to this country. Minister Coveney commended the Dairy co-ops for their work over the past two weeks. John Allen IT was certainly a case of twice as nice for The West Bar, Westport, Co Mayo, as for the second year running they were crowned All-Ireland Chowder Champion at the All-Ireland Chowder Cook-Off which took place in Kinsale on Sunday 21st April. Almost 900 people cast their vote, to choose their champion in the hotly contested All-Ireland Chowder Cook-Off which took place in Acton’s Hotel, Kinsale. The event saw chefs, fishermen and commercial chowder producers from every county of Ireland serve up pots and pots of delicious creamy chowder in a bid to walk away with the coveted title. A UNIQUE “Bookshop Band” from the UK will be appearing at the Bookstor in Kinsale on April 30th as part of their upcoming Irish tour. The Bookshop Band write songs inspired by books and are bringing their uniquely-inspired and accomplished songs to bookshops throughout Ireland. Since their first event in September 2010, the band has written over 70 songs inspired by 39 books from Andrew Miller’s Pure (2011 Costa Novel of the Year) to China Mieville’s acclaimed science-fiction novel Embassytown. TOURISM Minister Michael Ring has unveiled the final route for the Wild Atlantic Way, a new touring route running from West Cork to Donegal. The Minister joined Fáilte Ireland to present the final route to 300 top overseas tour operators attending Meitheal 2013, Ireland’s largest tourism trade fair.
