THE Easter commemoration in Bandon takes place on Sunday March 31st in St Patrick’s Cemetery at 12.30 and will be addressed by Aengus O Snodaigh TD. Pic: Picture Denis Boyle WEST Cork anglers have vpiced their oppostion to the expansion of fish farming around the Irish coast which they say has a negative environmental impact. Anglers on the Bandon river, one of West Cork’s premier angling rivers have also gained the support of local Fianna Fáil town mayor Cllr. Gillian Coughlan in their opposition to the proposed fish farm in Galway Bay, which would be the biggest in Europe if completed. Hospital facing closure unless funding found claim campaigners CONCERNS are growing for the future viability of Bandon Community Hospital after the Government failed to guarantee its existence beyond the next three years. A WEST Cork motorist who pleaded guilty to careless driving which resulted in the death of a 67-year-old woman has been given a three-month suspended sentence and a two-year driving ban by Judge Sean O’Donnobháin in Cork. Sinead Timoney from Millcove, Rosscarbery was originally charged with dangerous driving causing the death of Mary O’Leary on the main N71 south of Innishannon in September 2011 but pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of careless driving. The court in Cork heard that the husband of the deceased, Donal O’Leary from Dunmanway, did not want to see another life ruined and did not want to see the 30-year-old go to jail. more » FINE Gael Cork South West Deputy, Jim Daly, has welcomed confirmation that homeowners who are living in flood areas should take account of the fact when filing a tax return for the property tax. A NEW Government pilot scheme which asks local communities to stump-up up to half the cost of repairs and improvements for regional and local roads has come in for criticism in West Cork. The Pilot Community Involvement Scheme (CIS) asks for contributions from communities of 20% to 50% of the total cost, in monetary terms or in kind, by supplying labour or machinery directly for repairs to potholes and road strengthening works, the removal of grass verges or banks and the opening of backshores and other works. BANDON Town Council recently unanimously supported a Sinn Fein motion calling on the government to repeal the legislation which gives effect to the property tax. Cllr Rachel McCarthy who brought forward the motion said, “I am delighted that my fellow councillors from all political parties supported my motion tonight. 
‘Do it Yourself – Self-Help on the Shelf’ is a new initiative which provides a list of recommended books (available to borrow from Bandon library) and websites to help people deal with common problems such as anger management and bereavement.
