THE iconic Top of Coom pub on the Cork / Kerry border between Coolea and Kilgarvan has been destroyed by fire.
Fire brigade units from Kenmare and Killarney attended the blaze last night at the pub, famous for being the highest in Ireland at 1,045 ft above sea level.
The alarm was raised at around 9pm and the fire was finally extinguished at 4.45am as fire fighters battled the flames for several hours.
Owner Tim Creedon was treated for smoke inhalation in hospital after he helped get an elderly customer out of the buildings.
His wife and four children in the adjoining house were unharmed.
The blaze is believed to have started in the pub’s open fire.
Gardaí are investigating the circumstances of the fire but it is not thought to be deliberate.
So sad to hear this news..especially sad for the family and the loss of their livelihood! I hope they can rebuild. Every time I’ve visited from Colorado they have been so gracious. Grateful they are all safe.
