This month, communities along the West Cork coast will commemorate the centenary of the Titanic’s ill-fated maiden voyage when she left Cork Harbour destined never to arrive in America.
The Irish Navy will retrace the historic voyage on Wednesday, April 11th and a remembrance ceremony will also be held at Galley Head at 12.30pm exactly a century after the Titanic last passed the headland.
The ceremony is being organised by the Galley Flash rowing club and Sandscove Fishing Club.
The Lighthouse will open to the public (over 10s) on the day from 1pm to 5pm.
The local Lifeboat will also be in attendance and there will be entertainment by children from local schools.
In keeping with the ‘Safety at Sea’ ethos of the two groups organising the event a collection will be taken up for the RNLI.
