WEST Cork’s magnificent Atlantic coastline is set to be part of a new tourism initiative aimed at promoting the western seaboard to overseas visitors.

Tourism body Failte Ireland is currently drawing up plans for the “Wild Atlantic Drive”, a coastal route taking in the best of Ireland’s Atlantic scenery from West Cork to Donegal.

The scenic drive is designed to rival the likes of California’s Pacific Coast Highway and Australia’s Great Ocean Road as one of the world’s best scenic holiday routes.

Highlights of the route will include Donegal’s Slieve League sea cliffs, Achill Island in Mayo, Galway’s Connemara, the Burren in Co. Clare and the peninsulas of Kerry and West Cork.

Plans have not yet been finalised but the route is expected to be designed around a two-week travel time and highlight a number of diversions and excursions along the way.

  1. I would highly recommend that you include Mizen Head which is the most southwesterly point in Ireland & then follow the road around Barleycove Beach, Stony Beach and Cockle Strand which are all on the same route!! You will then pass through the village of Goleen which many call the last village in Ireland next stop New York!
