Bandon native killed in Norway kayak accident laid to rest

Colm Johnson

THE 24-year-old student from Bandon who died in a tragic kayaking accident in Norway last week was buried in Bandon today (Monday).

Colm Johnson from Clancoolmore, Bandon was on holiday with friends in Norway when the accident occurred as he was kayaking on the Sjoa River last Monday afternoon.

It is understood the UCC student got into trouble negotiating a ravine on the river which is a popular destination for kayakers.

Mr Johnson who was a member of the UCC kayaking club is survived by his parents Maurice and Ann, brother Alan and sisters, Síle and Niamh.

Requiem Mass was at St Patrick’s Church, Bandon followed by the funeral afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.

Donations, in lieu of flowers to the Bandon Branch of St Vincent de Paul.

Comments

  1. Dear Colm will be fondly remembered by all his work colleagues in Carbon Group.
    May he rest in peace.

  2. M. Brennan says:

If someone could pass this along to his parents, I would appreciate it.

I studied at University of Limerick in 2007 on Erasmus from the United States. I had a kayaking mishap on a river and Colm essentially saved me from drowning. I want his parents to know how grateful I am that he did that for me; I feel I never properly thanked him for what he did.

  3. Denise Browne says:

I knew Colm during my two short years of kayaking with UL, he was a great guy.

Always up for a laugh, helpful when asked or when he saw something he could help with.

A great guy, through and through.

    He will be sorely missed.

My thoughts are with his family and close friends.
