PROPOSALS to develop a new Aldi discount supermarket in Skibbereen moved a step closer at the last meeting of Skibbereen Town Council as councillors agreed on a vote of 8-1 to allow a right of way to the proposed site at the side of the Fairfield car park.

Mayor Cllr Karen Coakley was the only councillor who opposed the move which is expected to see developer Shead Properties lodge a planning application for a new supermarket which is believed to be earmarked for a new Aldi.

Aldi opened their first branch in West Cork last year in Dunmanway which has proved a big hit with shoppers but plans to develop another Aldi at Clonakilty’s Waterfront development proved unsuccessful.

I think there is enough of shops in Skibbereen with Lidel you do not have the population i n Skibbereen compare to Ballincollig where you have twq Aldis aswell as other shops why did they not put the Aldi in Bantry it would have much sense. I will be in Bantry tomorrow and i will still have to go to Skibb on Friday to do the weekly shop as parking and trying to carry a trolly to a car is a nightmear and why don,t they go out further to the mizen area you would still have a catchment area.
