Apple expansion good news for West Cork

FINE Gael TD for Cork South West Noel Harrington has said  that Apple’s expansion of operations in Cork city with the creation of 500 new jobs over the next 18 months is good news for West Cork.

PGi (Premiere Global Services), the global leader in cloud-based communications is this year celebrating its tenth anniversary at its European centre of excellence in Clonakilty.

Headquartered in Atlanta (US) and in operation as an organisation since 1992, PGi established its European base at the West Cork Technology Park in 2002.

Since then the company has significantly grown at this site and now boasts 210 locally based employees.

West Cork lingo goes high-tech with new app

WOULD you believe it? Two entrepreneurial teens from Leap Foróige Club have developed an iPhone App that translates Cork English into mainstream English.

Sixteen-year-olds Austin Keane and Liam Horgan are also members of Foróige’s democratically elected Reference Panel.

The idea sprang from hearing locals in West Cork using phrases that the lads had never heard outside of their native county.

Major expansion for Eli Lilly in Kinsale

PHARMACEUTICAL giant Eli Lilly have announced a new €330m investment in Kinsale that will create 200 full-time jobs and another 300 in the construction phase.

The announcement was made today at the Carlton Hotel, Kinsale by Jobs Minister Richard Bruton.

The company is to begin work immediately on the new manufacturing plant at its existing facility at Dunderrow near Kinsale.

Public consultation on “Our Ocean Wealth”

MARINE Minister Simon Coveney has launched a public consultation process on how to harness the potential of Ireland’s vast marine resource to tap into a Trillion Euro global market for marine products and services (including seafood, tourism, shipping, oil and gas, renewable ocean energy and new applications for health, medicine and technology).

Launching the public consultation “Our Ocean Wealth”, Minister Coveney said that Ireland needs to change the way we think about the sea and look for new opportunities to harness the potential of our 220 million acre marine resource.

Forest roads grant scheme to be opened immediately

MINISTER of State, Shane McEntee confirmed today the opening immediate of a new forest roads grant scheme.

The primary aim of the Forest Roads Scheme is to provide funding for the construction of management and harvesting roads and other infrastructural works to facilitate timber harvesting.

First video streaming service launches in West Cork

FILM Fans in West Cork can now sign up for Netflix, the first online film and TV rental service available in Ireland.

The service streams movies and TV shows direct and on demand over the internet removing the need to rent a physical copy from a video store.

The movies can be watched on internet enabled TVs, via games consoles or on computers, laptops, tablets and smart phones.

The Irish site currently has content available from the BBC, Channel 4 and ITV and as well as Disney, Paramount, and Twentieth Century Fox.
