Youth Reach Macroom deliver the goods for St Coleman’s Primary School

THE work of seven students in Macroom Youth Reach Centre for Education culminated in the creation of an outdoor chalkboard play area for children in the autistic unit of St Coleman’s Primary School, Macroom.

 

The project was undertaken as part of the Leaving Cert Applied Curriculum under the guidance of the Careers Guidance teacher Alayne Hynes and Art Craft and Design teacher Daragh Martin respectively.

 

As part of the community work module the students chose to work with St Coleman’s Boys National School, Macroom, in appreciation of the support which the Principal Mr Martin Clancy has consistently offered the Youth Reach programme.

Local company Folláin goes from strength to strength

FOLLÁINFolláin Traditional Irish Preserves started life in the kitchen of Peadar and Máirín O’Lionáird twenty nine years ago in Cúil Aodha, near Macroom in West Cork.

 

Married the year before in 1982, Máirín had been working with her friend Eithne Ui Shiadhail at a local honey processing company when they were made redundant.

A NEW service for job-seekers has commenced in Macroom. The job-seekers resource centre is open on Wednesday and Thursday mornings from 10am until 12.30 in the pitch and putt clubhouse, Macroom.

 

The free services are provided by volunteers who have been trained to mentor and support job-seekers through the steps involved.

citizens-informationRECENTLY West Cork Citizens Information Service has noted an increase in queries from the public in relation to their employment rights.

 

These include concerns re non-payment of annual leave, entitlement to public holidays as well as concerns about employees having their working conditions or hours of work changed without consultation.

West Cork couple found guilty of handling stolen property

A LITHUANIAN national living in West Cork has been jailed for a year and banned from Ireland for five years on his release arising out of an investigation into a spate of burglaries throughout Cork and Kerry where over €90,000 worth of property was stolen.

House fire in Macroom – 81-year-old pronounced dead at the scene.

Emergency services rushed to the scene of a house fire in Kilavoultra, near Macroom shortly after 7 pm on bank holiday Monday.

 

While the blaze was quickly brought under control, fire fighters removed an 81-year-old woman from the house who was tragically pronounced dead at the scene. A man and a women believed to be the son and daughter of the deceased, were also rescued from the house. They are being treated for the smoke inhalation.

 

An investigation as to the cause of the fire is now underway.

 

C2C 5 Mile Run

C2C 5 Mile Run Breakthrough CancerRunners getting ready for the C2C 5 Mile Run at the GAA grounds in Clondrohid, in aid of Breakthrough Cancer. This will be the 3rd year for the C2C to take place, and so far it has raised nearly €35,000 for Cancer Research.

West Cork in the running in Irish Times favourite holiday spot contest
