THE Minister of State at the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Dinny McGinley TD, has announced that his department has come to an agreement with Comharchumann Chléire Teo regarding the provision of a subsidised heavy cargo service for islands in West Cork.
PLANS to extend the rebate on diesel to the operators of private buses and coaches from July 1st saving coach operators w 7.5 cent on each litre of diesel purchased have been welcomed by West Cork TDs.

Irate motorists – “why are we paying road tax”
CORK County roads are set to benefit from €40 million under the 2013 local and regional roads fund, which has been announced by the Department of Transport, but the future is rough for West Cork roads, warns Dunmanway-based independent councillor Declan Hurley.
According to Cllr Hurley the allocation received for regional and local roads for 2013 is almost €46.5m and will be spent on the completion of specific projects and on routine improvements and restoration works, but this he says still falls “a long way short” of addressing the real scale of the disastrous road conditions around the county.
BANDON Town Cllr Margaret Murphy O’Mahony is currently negotiating with the West Cork Rural Transport Scheme to secure a daily service for third level students from Bandon to Cork.

IT has been described by many as like driving on the moon; there was even a suggestion made that the 22 Fine Gael councillors in Cork County should cycle the road to inspect its condition; but now, finally work is to begin on one of the worst stretches of the N71 in West Cork, the Clonakilty bypass.
Work will begin next Monday, November 19th at the western end of the town and will proceed eastwards from the Maxol Garage.

THE long awaited realignment work at the Junction of Quarry Road, East Green, Park Road and Mary Street on the Dunmanway town bypass has commenced.
Declan Hurley
LOCAL independent councillor Declan Hurley has confirmed that funding has been diverted to address a number of local roads in the greater Dunmanway area which were damaged in the recent severe flash floods.
In particular roads in Haremount, Monavadda and Derryleigh had to be closed to traffic due to the severity of the damage. [Read more...]

A NEW service for job-seekers has commenced in Macroom. The job-seekers resource centre is open on Wednesday and Thursday mornings from 10am until 12.30 in the pitch and putt clubhouse, Macroom. The free services are provided by volunteers who have been trained to mentor and support job-seekers through the steps involved.
