Cork North West TD, Aindrias Moynihan has said that he is hopeful that works that are currently being undertaken by the ESB at the Gearagh improve access and help kick start the regrowth and regeneration of the recently damaged treescape.
“I have been informed by the ESB that they are planning to ‘undertake additional remedial works on the surface of the walkway and also additional pruning which will aid natural regeneration of the trees.
“This will be very welcome news for the area and for the thousands of local people who make use out of the Gearagh every year.
“It’s imperative that the walkways are reinstated as quickly as possible. Without these works, access to the Gearagh has been severely restricted.
“As important as the walkways is the regeneration of the treescape. Following the actions of the ESB, the treescape has been severely damaged, and it requires significant works to allow it to regenerate appropriately.
“The ESB has informed me that they hope to have the works completed over the next week, and I will be keeping an eye on the work to ensure that it is finalised as quickly as possible.
“It is my understanding that an inspector from the National Parks and Wildfire Service is due to visit the park in the next week or so to review the progress to date. This is an important development and demonstrates the need for all agencies to work together to deliver for the Gearagh.
“Local people need to have their access to the Gearagh restored as quickly as possible.
“The unilateral moves by the ESB in the aftermath of Storm Ophelia can never be allowed to happen again; they need to accept that there are other stakeholders who must be consulted and their permission sought,” concluded Moynihan.
