CORK-based Senator, Tim Lombard, would like to see funding allocated for the redevelopment of Timoleague Garda station. During a Seanad Debate in February Senator Lombard raised this issue but was disappointed with the response.
“I raised the issue of the condition of the Timoleague Garda Station in the Seanad in February, but was unable to secure specific funding allocation for the renewal of this rural Garda Station.
“While I can appreciate the significant investment already put towards the national Garda estate – the Garda Station Building and Refurbishment Programme 2016-2021 has been based on priorities established by An Garda Síochána in cooperation with the OPW – I do believe the programme requires extension.
“The Timoleague Garda Station is the project I highlighted, but there are undoubtedly more throughout rural Ireland; Garda stations in small towns and villages that are falling into disrepair, creating an infrastructural deficit. Refurbishment and upgrading of the physical buildings we currently have, if done now will save future incremental costs.
“These rural Garda Stations are a key part of the local infrastructure, both physical and social. They ensure a strong, visable police presence throughout the country which provides reassurance to citizens and helps deter crime. If we can improve this infrastructure we can improve the quality of life for the people on the ground.”
