In the last year, Frances Ryan has created a series of paintings that celebrate the wonder of plant life. Combining observational studies with spontaneous mark making, these oils are an intuitive, even emotional response to encounters with a wide variety of botanical specimens from different parts of the world.
Capturing an almost childlike wonder, they are inspired, in part, by visits to Dublin and Kew Botanical Gardens. Ryan’s use of vivid colour, abstracted forms, and repeated patterns mark an exciting new direction for this artist. A digital catalogue of the show is available here.
This is Ryan’s third solo show at the Catherine Hammond Gallery. Ryan (b. 1960 Longford, Ireland) is currently based in Co. Down, Northern Ireland. Her work is in many major Irish public collections and in private collections in Ireland, Europe and North America.
The exhibition runs from September 1 to October 30, 2017. Autumn hours are Wednesday – Friday, 11 to 5, Saturday 11 to 4.
