AN 83-year-old West Cork farmer has died following a quad bike accident at his farm at Carrigroe, Enniskeane.
Tom Hales was a well respected member of the local community having just last Sunday led the Kilmichael Ambush commemoration, he also raised the Irish flag at the unveiling of a 1916 monument in Ballinadee.
It is understood that a quad bike Mr Hales was riding overturned, killing him. A keen supporter of local vintage rallies, he was an active member of the local community having been involved in a number of initiatives remembering those who played their part in the struggle for Irish independence.
He was the son and nephew of the Hales brothers, well known IRA members during the War of Independence and was involved in planning a new 1916 monument in Bandon.
A lecture on the Hales brothers planned for Clonakilty on Thursday December 8th was canceled following the tragic news.
He is survived by his wife Mary, children Áine, Martina, Frank and Mairéad, brother, two sisters and seven grandchildren.
