The Handmade Toy and Baby Gift people, Little Green Dot, have teamed up with 15 other local Makers and will launch this unique project in the town on Friday July 21st.
The west Cork town of Clonakilty has been the home of Little Green Dot since they launched their handmade toy and baby gift craft business in October 2013. They have now joined forces with 15 other Makers from Cork to create what is hoped will be a new hub for craft and design in the region. Their new Irish-Made Design Shop stocks a varied selection of work from handbound Books (Barbara Hubert Bookbindery in Cork city), hand-felted fairies and pixies (Feltastik by textile artist and feltmaker Stephanie Tenier), Petal to Petal illustrations and prints (by Baltimore based Lily Corcoran), newly launched Inchydoney Candles (from Inchydoney native Louise Kingston), contemporary pieces by Concrete Forest (recently launched by Kevin Corcoran), award-nominated Little Red and Ewe Sir and much more from the creative people of Cork. They are also based inside Clonakilty Community Arts Centre in central Clonakilty and so are both literally and figuratively at the creative heart of this vibrant west Cork town.
There has been a huge upsurge of interest in Irish Craft and Design in recent years. As Lisa Tonge (the owner and maker behind Little Green Dot) explains ‘people are so interested these days in how and where things are made and for us (at Little Green Dot), it’s always nice to talk about our work and explain about our craft. Our new space in the centre of Clonakilty will allow for greater interaction with the public and allow them to learn more about what we do and about other amazingly talented people and their work from the area. We are very excited about welcoming people into our little domain and showcasing what Little Green Dot and Cork Makers have to offer’. The official opening takes place on Friday July 21st at 7pm and all are welcome.
The reaction to this project has been very positive thus far. Most of the Makers involved are registered with the Design and Crafts Council of Ireland and Cork Craft and Design and the standard is very high. Little Green Dot themselves make contemporary, quality baby gifts and toys, in a traditional and ethical way, so that they will be cherished now and in the future. They have appeared on television and in many national and local publications. They were also shortlisted in the Maternity and Infant Award 2016 and 2014 Final in two categories, trendy tots and best toy brand.
