Disabled parking time limits to be addressed at county council

THE enforcement of time limits on disabled parking places in free parking areas is set to be addressed at county council level after the issue was raised by a concerned resident in Clonakilty.

Marie contacted the Cork Today programme on C103 radio to highlight the fact that signage on Pearse Street in Clonakilty indicated that the same two-hour time limit applies to disabled spaces and other spaces in the area.

Local councillor Christopher O’Sullivan confirmed that following an amendment to the Road Traffic Act in 2011 disabled spaces are indeed subject to the same limits as other spaces on the same street, something he was not aware of.

Previously, disabled spaces were not subject to any time limit and ironically this is still the case in paid parking areas.

Cllr O’Sullivan confirmed to presenter Patricia Messinger that he would be putting a motion to the County Council to address the issue with a view to extending the time period for disabled parking which he hoped could be addressed through local by-laws.

Caller Marie confirmed that even local gardaí were not aware of the current situation when she asked them about it.
