NOLLAIG na mBan or Women’s Christmas – the day when women traditionally get together for a knees-up after their hard-work during Christmas, is a thriving tradition in Cork and for over a decade Cork Simon Community has hosted the West Cork Women’s Christmas Lunch, celebrating women and companionship and raising much needed funds for people who are homeless.
This coming Nollaig na mBan, Cork Simon’s West Cork Women’s Christmas Lunch takes place at the Celtic Ross Hotel in Rosscarbery on January 7th and will celebrate women’s solidary with all funds raised from the lunch dedicated to women’s services at Cork Simon.
The Women’s Christmas Lunch starts at 1.30pm with a mulled wine reception in the Celtic Ross Hotel’s tower overlooking the lake in Rosscarbery. The reception will be followed by a three course meal with wine and there will be a raffle of wonderful prizes and entertainment after the meal.
Highlighting the growing number of women who are experiencing homelessness, Cork Simon’s Director, Dermot Kavanagh, said “The number of women we support has unfortunately more than doubled in the last five years and we see this trend continuing. Last year we supported 187 women, among them 50 women who had the traumatic experience of sleeping rough.”
“We find women’s experiences of homelessness can differ significantly to men’s with family conflict and domestic violence often the main triggers for homelessness among women. Oftentimes when women come to our shelter, it is their last resort and many are at crisis point. Being able to provide a warm, safe place such as our women’s corridor in the shelter and the support of female staff trained in issues specific to women can help to ease the trauma.”
Always a highlight of the Christmas calendar, the West Cork Women’s Christmas Lunch in aid of Cork Simon is a fun and festive afternoon with tickets to the lunch making special and memorable Christmas presents. Tickets to lunch at the Celtic Ross Hotel on January 7th are €50 each and are available from Emma at the Celtic Ross Hotel on 023 884 8722 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
