Thinking Christmas? Think Your County, Your Town.

Cork County Council roll out festive campaign supporting local businesses across the county and offer free parking in all County Council car parks for the month of December.

Cork County Council are taking the lead this festive season in encouraging support for local businesses and retailers in towns throughout Cork County. The initiative was announced by County Mayor Seamus McGrath and Chief Executive Tim Lucey who are calling on people to support local businesses in the run up to Christmas.

Keen to back up their campaign with a tangible support Cork County Council are offering free parking in county council operated carparks as well as certain designated on-street areas for the month of December as an added incentive to think about your town when choosing where to spend throughout the festive season. The free parking initiative will be available in towns including Kanturk, Millstreet, Macroom, Bandon, Kinsale, Skibbereen, Clonakilty, Bantry, Castletownbere, Ballincollig, Dunmanway, Schull and Newmarket.

Whether it’s a trip to your local post office for Christmas cards and stamps, local crafts for gift giving, Christmas party nights in your local restaurants and bars, pre-Christmas preening with the barbour or hairdressers around the corner or getting all the trimmings for seasons eatings at butchers and grocers on your main street there are hundreds of ways your Christmas can be sourced locally.

Recent figures from the Irish Small & Medium Enterprise Association (ISME) show that buying from locally owned businesses keeps money circulating closer to where you spend. The ‘trickle down’ effect’ when you support local business people is that they in turn use local services such as accountants, insurance brokers and suppliers as well as tending to employ people who live nearby. These local businesses also tend to stock a higher percentage of locally produced goods. In fact every 10 spent locally on Irish products generates 24 of benefit to the local community!

This year Cork County Council will also be actively promoting the switching on ceremonies of Christmas lights in towns across the county, with the majority of these getting illuminated right up to 8th December. Cork County Council have also set up social media platforms @ThinkCorkCounty on Facebook and Twitter  where you can find frequent updates, local offers, festive news from your local town, aimed at further promoting the message of shopping locally and supporting service providers in your town.

Cork County Council are proud to support local businesses this Christmas, for full details of free parking and light switching ceremonies around the county see www.corkcoco.ie or @ThinkCorkCounty on Facebook and Twitter
