Indiegogo campaign into final stage with a bang!
Breaking Out is a feature documentary in production which tells the story of
Fergus O’Farrell, a legend amongst his musical peers in Ireland who passed away last year after a lifelong battle with the progressive condition muscular dystrophy. It’s the story of a man with a talent for music and for life.
On Thursday 2nd February 2017 in the Cork Opera House Glen Hansard and the Interference family gathered to celebrate the music of Fergus O’Farrell, on the first anniversary of his passing. A trailer for Breaking Out, a feature documentary on the life of Fergus O’Farrell was also shown on the night to launch an indiegogo campaign to help fund the completion of the film.
Director Michael McCormack introduced the clip which featured footage that he’d shot with Fergus over 10 years, taking him from West Cork to the Czech Republic and to Radio City Music Hall in New York, up to and including recording with Glen Hansard and the Frames at Fergus’ home in Schull just a week a half before Fergus died. The film is in development with the Irish Film Board and it is the director’s intention to bring it to completion this year and has set up Silver Moonbeam Film for that purpose.
The second celebratory concert took place in Vicar Street on the 5th February, again with a cast of musicians that collaborated with Fergus over the years, and the trailer was once again shown live at the event. The crowdfunding campaign has proved to be an extraordinary success with 88% of the goal achieved as it enters the final stretch.
The Sunday Independent reacted to this groundswell of support with a four page article on the story of the film and campaign on the 19th March.
Director Michael McCormack knew crowdfunding would be the perfect vehicle to raise funds to help complete Breaking Out, “I always believed in Fergus’ story. This film became his ultimate performance, and those who got to know him and his music should be involved, because his story is about people and friendship. The story is like a modern fairytale and at the heart of it is this wonderful love story.”
