Beautiful Bantry hosts West Cork Literary Festival 2017

Beautiful Bantry Bay opens up for a week of readings, workshops, seminars, and interviews,  as some of the leading lights of  the national and international literary world descend upon the picturesque town for the West Cork Literary Festival from  Friday 14th to Friday 21st July.

A long list of esteemed writers, such as Laureate for Irish Fiction, Anne Enright, Paula Meehan, Graham Norton, Colm Tóibín, Eimear McBride and Mike McCormack, will be rubbing shoulders with emerging stars such as Sara Baume, Billy O’Callaghan and Lisa McInerney. 

Ian McGuire, who was on the original line up, can no longer attend the festival for family reasons, instead, Jon Gower wll read alongside Cyan Jones as part of this year’s special island event on Whiddy Island. Visitors to the festival can also enjoy a dip into the famous Bay at the Festival Swim, attend a reading on the LÉ Samuel Beckett navy vessel with Emma Jane Kirby, zen out with yoga on the lawns of Bantry House, learn about artist John Kelly’s adventures to Antartica, or call into the West Cork Letter Cafe to write to a loved one.

Those wishing to hone their writing skills can attend seminars on diary writing, book reviewing, how to attract a literary agent, and writing restaurant reviews. Writing workshops will be given by by Alissa Nutting, Vona Groarke, Lara Marlowe, Dave Lordan, Jan Carson, Dean Bakopoulos, Doireann Ní Ghríofa, John Spillane and Phoebe Smith. There’s even something for the little ones as The Children’s Festival sees the return of The Book Clinic, where young readers are invited to meet the Book Doctor and pick up a prescription for some exciting books and comics, and workshops and readings by Laureate na nÓg PJ Lynch, Dave Lordan, Holly Smale, and many more.
