WEST Cork’s independent TD Michael Collins has called on the Minister for Agriculture, Michael Creed to ensure that the promises made in connection to increased payments to the Areas of Natural Constraint (ANC) scheme are honoured.
‘While an extra €25 million was agreed in the program for Government for those farmers working and living in ANC areas these funds have yet to be delivered,’ Deputy Collins said. These extra funds must be ring fenced and presented as part of Budget 2018.’
There are 32,000 farmers nationwide who farm the most highly constrained lands in the ANC with a large number of farms located on the peninsulas and island in West Cork.
‘To ensure the viability of farms and of the farmers and their families in these are these funds must be guaranteed in Budget 2018 and made available urgently,’ Deputy Collins said. Farmers who are mostly located in the Mountain Sheep Grazing (MSG) area’s are suffering due to increased costs and falling prices more most be done now to correct the imbalance in the system and to ensure farming families have a sustainably and viable business for future generations.’
