2016 Community Games began with the swimming trials in February. 11 children then progressed to the Cork finals in Bishopstown in April. For 5 children, this was their first swimming compeitition and they coped with the 25metre pool extremely well. Beara brought home 4 individual medals and a bronze in the u13 girls freestyle relay.
Beara Community Games ran their Beara Athletics Day on Monday May 2nd May at Droum GAA pitch. Following this, twenty one children from Beara took part in the Cork Community Games Athletics event at CIT on Sunday June 12th. The children took part in various individual and team relay races. Ben O’Sullivan won the Boys Under 12 100m track race. As well as receiving a gold medal he qualified to represent Cork in this race in the National Community Games finals in August where he came 5th in Ireland.
U10/ U12 HANDWRITING
Ten children from Beara competed at the county handwriting finals in Cork on Sunday June 12th at CIT. Breixo Carleton came first in the U12 Boys Competition and went on to represent Cork in the Community Games National Finals in Athlone in August.
A great amount of entries in the Art competition. Maria Harrington u8 and Laura Walsh u12 (Bere island) competed in Cork. The 3 children who gained Gold in the Art in Cork also took the trip to Athlone. Eimear Lynch of Castletownbere, Cathal O’Sullivan of Cahermore and Nina Schmida-Brown of Eyeries.
U12/ U16 SOLO TALENT
New for Beara Community Games, this event was on Saturday April 2nd. Beara showcased it’s wonderful array of musical and vocal talent at Castletownbere primary school. A total of 17 entries provided a great morning’s entertainment. A wide variety of instruments were used; ukelele, violin, mandolin, fiddle, piano, button accordion and guitar. Darragh Murphy of Castletownbere went on to compete in Athlone in the U12 singing event.
U10 BOYS INDOOR SOCCER
Beara entered an U10 boys indoor soccer team in Cork Community Games and the team went on to represent Cork in the Munster Community Games Final at the University of Limerick Sports Arena on Saturday July 2nd. They narrowly missed out from progressing after their first match was lost by only 1 goal.
U13 BOYS FUTSAL
This is a fast, 5-a-side soccer game played on a small astro pitch. U13 Boys Futsal Team represented Cork in the Community Games Munster Finals at the University of Limerick on Saturday 2nd July. The won their first two rounds and received Silver Munster Medals as runners up in the final.
The Quiz was another new entry for Beara this year with 2 teams travelling to CIT on the same day as the Athletics event. The children were chosen for the teams after taking part in the Beara Schools Quiz in Castletownbere National school in April. Jack O’Neill from Castletownbere was joined by 7 children from Eyeries from Eyeries, Mark Cronin, Pearse Downey, Ryan Hanley, Josie Millard, Emily Angles, Amanda Power and Oisin Lynch.
