Age is just a number for Airbnb Superhost Ian!

Ian Stretch and his two grandsons Rory and Connor

Age is just a number for Ian Stretch who resides in a quaint cottage in Bantry. Ian aged 85 is the oldest Superhost on Airbnb in Cork.

He is an extraordinary character who has great stories to tell and a beautiful home to share. His annex, listed on Airbnb, is part of a charming cottage where you can stay for from €50 per night. His farmhouse accommodates two guests and is approx 10km from Bantry.Ian is a retired veterinary surgeon and has been hosting on Airbnb for three years. Originally from Scotland, he also lived on the Isle of Wight, England, Wales and New Zealand. He has travelled extensively since retirement and works with animal charities. Ian and his wife listed their annex after a friend recommended the Airbnb platform, and the extra income they generate from sharing their space supplements their pensions.

Commenting on his hosting experience, Ian said “As we live in a remote area the company of visitors adds a new dimension to our lifestyle. We always seem to have delightful guests”.  His most memorable guests are a French couple that visited at the start. “We became great friends with them sharing life stories over homemade beer and talking into the night. The amount of interaction between the guests and the hosts depends on how much the guests want and everyone is different.”

The majority of his guests are touring the west of Ireland, exploring the beautiful scenery and are always amazed by Ian’s favourite spot Beara Peninsula. Ian said the guests that stay with him have a genuine interest in Ireland and a love for the people, craic, relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

  1. Well he seems like a remarkable old gentleman. Perhaps I will call by for a night or two and trade some Dalwhinnie for a glass or two of his electric soup !
