To celebrate the Fastnet Film Festival that takes place in Schull in May, Blue House Gallery will be filling both floors with paintings, sculpture, ceramics, photographs and textiles by invited artists on the theme of ‘Islands’.
The exhibition runs from 24 May – 14 June, with the opening from 5 – 8pm on Friday 26 May, and includes work by Brian Lalor, Christine Thery, Cormac Boydell, John Doherty, John Kelly, Julia Zagar and Keith Payne amongst others.
In addition, the front room upstairs in the gallery will become an ‘Art Haus’, showing films with an island flavour from Friday 26 – Sunday 28 May. The Friday evening exhibition opening will feature a screening at 5pm of the 1934 drama documentary Man of Aran, directed by Robert J. Flaherty, a re-creation of culture on the edges of modern society.
Aran island artist Cyril Ó Flaithearta, whose paintings are in the Island exhibition, will introduce the film and talk about life on the island, as well as the The Oileán Project, an ongoing creative exploration of the abandoned islands around the Irish coast, in which he records his impressions of these extraordinary places.
